Remembering the Good Times

NOTE: THIS IS A REBLOG FROM ONE YEAR AGO. I decided to repost because summertime often brings back memories of the time I spent with these kids. 

When I think back on this book it is very much like thinking on old friends. Such an incredible book that it absolutely has to be on my list of the three most influential books from my childhood. Previously I wrote about Prince Ombra and Out of the Bug Jar. They were both fairly innocent introductions to the world of fantasy and adventures, but nothing could have prepared me for the experience I had while reading Richard Peck’s book, which is not a fantasy at all. Mary Had a Little Lab

My synopsis.
Mary is a scientist who is so busy inventing she forgets to make friends. She decides to create a pet for herself but when it becomes so popular and she creates more, things get out of hand.

Why I picked up this book.
On Twitter I had asked if any other writers had ever dreamt a story idea and if so did it work out writing it. Sue Fliess actually responded and said this story of hers was born from a dream. It’s her best selling book. I had heard of this book but hadn’t read it so it was clearly time. The Adventures of a South Pole Pig

At my last library visit, I found a gem of a book that was the one I thought I’d like least of all. The library only had one of the six books I was searching for so I had to browse for good stories instead. I picked up this book because it was small and I liked the illustrations. I read a few pages from the middle and decided I liked the tone. I read the book flap and thought, “This will be a typical cute story. Julián Is a Mermaid

Julián is a Mermaid is, for me, a book about why I love picture books. It’s a book about the innocence and imagination of children. It’s a book about love. Julián sees something beautiful on his way home and feels the urge, the need, to be as beautiful and magical.
