Goodreads Monday: My Jasper June

Goodreads Monday is a great way to talk about a book from your TBR list. Originally started by Lauren’s Page Turners, most people do these weekly, (such as Confessions of a YA Reader who partakes in several fun blog themes) I prefer to do mine monthly and this month I chose a middle-grade novel.

“My Jasper June” caught my attention with its summer magic theme which of course was my favorite time of the year when I was younger. Also, the theme of dealing with loss is one I am keen on reading especially from a middle-grade book.

Here is it’s Goodreads blurb:

jasper juneMy Jasper June by Laurel Snyder

The school year is over, and it is summer in Atlanta. The sky is blue, the sun is blazing, and the days brim with possibility. But Leah feels. . . lost. She has been this way since one terrible afternoon a year ago, when everything changed. Since that day, her parents have become distant, her friends have fallen away, and Leah’s been adrift and alone.

Then she meets Jasper, a girl unlike anyone she has ever known. There’s something mysterious about Jasper, almost magical. And Jasper, Leah discovers, is also lost.

Together, the two girls carve out a place for themselves, a hideaway in the overgrown spaces of Atlanta, away from their parents and their hardships, somewhere only they can find.

But as the days of this magical June start to draw to a close, and the darker realities of their lives intrude once more, Leah and Jasper have to decide how real their friendship is, and whether it can be enough to save them both.

Goodreads Monday (September)

Goodreads Monday is hosted by Lauren’s Page Turners. It’s a great way to talk about a book from your TBR list and just kind of show it off.  Instead of weekly, I do them monthly right now. It’s one post I’d like to keep up with while my schedule and life keep getting weird. All writers struggle to find time to write so during these challenging weeks any precious time I’ve had has gone to my books rather than this blog.

I know I know, my vast number of readers are so disappointed.

IN ANY CASE, let’s move on so my pick of the month. I’m more excited about this than maybe I should be. I recently read the first book, “City of Ghosts”  only because of ghosts & Edinburgh. I’m going to Scotland this year and was looking for any reads that would take me there before my flight. I enjoyed it more than I thought I would and the second book came out just days ago! So here it is:

Tunnel Of Bones by Victoria Schwab

Trouble is haunting Cassidy Blake . . . even more than usual.

She (plus her ghost best friend, Jacob, of course) are in Paris, where Cass’s parents are filming their TV show about the world’s most haunted cities. Sure, it’s fun eating croissants and seeing the Eiffel Tower, but there’s true ghostly danger lurking beneath Paris, in the creepy underground Catacombs.

When Cass accidentally awakens a frighteningly strong spirit, she must rely on her still-growing skills as a ghosthunter — and turn to friends both old and new to help her unravel a mystery. But time is running out, and the spirit is only growing stronger.

And if Cass fails, the force she’s unleashed could haunt the city forever.

Grocery Store

I recently took a writing class called Story Telling For Kids run by Val Muller. One of our exercises was to pay attention to children out in the world and incorporate them into one of our stories if possible or just write the scene. I witnessed some kids with their father at a grocery shop visit and one boy was thrilled about a cartoon bear on a cereal box. It was pretty cute. I turned those boys into the girls from one of my middle-grade stories and expanded the moment.

Without giving the full synopsis, this a dark fantasy story about a young girl who’s family of three is dealing with new sadnesses, and (unbeknownst to them) very old evils. Samantha may just be able to help out if she could only keep her manners in check. Continue reading “Grocery Store”

The Adventures of a South Pole Pig

By Chris Kurtz.

At my last library visit, I found a gem of a book that was the one I thought I’d like least of all. The library only had one of the six books I was searching for so I had to browse for good stories instead. I picked up this book because it was small and I liked the illustrations. I read a few pages from the middle and decided I liked the tone. I read the book flap and thought, “This will be a typical cute story. Maybe boring but good for research.” (I write middle grade so I like to read middle grade) I was surprisingly incorrect. Continue reading “The Adventures of a South Pole Pig”

Goodreads Monday

I reactivated my Goodreads account yesterday so I figured I’d chime in on this post I always see on Confessions of a YA Reader’s blog. However, as she mentions, Goodreads Monday is hosted by Lauren’s Page Turners. So cheers to both of these fantastic bloggers.

Goodreads Monday is a way to talk about a book from your TBR list and just kind of show it off. As I mentioned, I just yesterday reactivated my Goodreads account so it’s a bit sparse at the moment, but I really needed a way to keep a list of all the books I wish to read one day.  The book I’m showing off today is one I heard of this morning on Twitter.

Repro_LittleBirdFlies_cvr.inddLittle Bird Flies by Karen McCombie.

Bridie lives on the remote Scottish island of Torrnish, the youngest of three sisters. Although she loves her island, with its wild seas and big skies, she guiltily nurses a secret dream of flight – to America and the freedom of the New World.

But her family are struggling under the spiteful oppression of the new Laird, and it seems that even some of the Laird’s own household are desperate to leave. When the Laird’s full cruelty becomes apparent, there’s no more time for daydreams as Bridie needs to help the people she loves escape to safety.

The first in a gripping, dramatic new series from much-loved author, Karen McCombie.

I love historical fiction and I love middle-grade books so this is a must. Not only that, three of my grandparents are from Scotland AND I have a trip planned there this year. This book has to be pushed up to the top of my list. It doesn’t seem to be in any of the libraries close to me so I may have to purchase it instead and add it to my real bookshelf.

That’s it! That is Goodreads Monday!
