PAGE CHALLENGE

I originally found this challenge on the blog of Confessions of a YA Reader but it is being hosted by Book Dragon’s Lair. This is perfect! I am one of those people who feels guilty about spending any “me time”. If I have free time it should be spent on chores, errands, extra work for my day job, etc. I have guilt issues when it comes to hobbies, especially anti-social ones like writing and reading. So yes, this is perfect. It will also tie in nicely to the cyber book club I’ve decided to follow hosted by MG Book Village. I joined Twitter just for this purpose.

A New Darkness

Recently I finished The Starblade Chronicles series by Joseph Delaney and did not come to the end with the usual sadness and grief I have when finishing a well-loved book. I enjoyed them, but as my nephew said when I asked how he liked them, they were “eh”. This could, of course, be because Delaney’s previous series The Wardstone Chronicles was so incredibly addictive to both me and my nephew. The original series has 13 books total and when I had first learned of them my nephew owned three. He urged me to borrow all three but I was doubtful and only borrowed the first titled “The Spooks Apprentice” of which most people are familiar. After reading the first book, I hastened to read the other two he had, and then before I knew it had purchased the entire series for him just so I could read them. New Year’s Eve

Today is the eve of a new year. We, together, say goodbye to the previous 12 months we have decidedly named one year. We measure time in years, months, hours, minutes and less. How do we measure that time spent? Is there a way to measure your moments, your events, your worth? Some will say that it’s just another year and there is no difference for them. The Inconvenience of Death

A phrase I often use, in various situations, is “Life Gets In the Way”. We all try to achieve certain things, keep up with good habits, stay in touch with friends and family, but the everyday wheels of the machine of life do tend to get in the way. We let that flow direct our moves and take over our choices. Things need to get done after all. Life moves on. Unless of course, it doesn’t. If we cannot stall our daily life machine enough to step away from the factory of events, there is another who has the power to do so, for all of eternity: Death. On Writing

Secret Society of Writers

I attended my very first SCBWI event this past weekend. It was MG/YA Day in Lancaster PA. Guest speakers included editor Rick Chillot of Quirk Books, agent Zoe Sandler of ICM Partners, middle-grade author Jennie K. Brown and young adult author Abbey Nash.

I will be honest with you; I don’t know why I went. This was an event put together by the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators. (SCBWI) It was designed specifically to help Middle-Grade authors and Young Adult authors. (hence MG/YA Day) I can remember not knowing those abbreviations once upon a time. So I know I’ve come a long way from the 2nd-grade student who liked to write stories, on the other hand, am I worthy of being among those in that “society”? Was there going to be a secret handshake?
